Ideas for a Self-Guided Bike Tour in Gdańsk

Group bike tour in Gdańsk exploring the Old Town with a local guide

What to See in Gdańsk in 3 Hours — a Self-Guided Bike Tour

Short layover in Gdańsk, a few hours between meetings, or one free morning at your hotel? Three hours is a surprisingly generous amount of time when you have a bike. On two wheels you will cover far more ground than on foot — no waiting for taxis, no traffic, all at your own pace.

Below you will find three ready-made ideas for a self-guided bike tour, each fitting comfortably within a 3-hour window. Pick the one that matches your interests — or mix elements from several routes to build the perfect ride.

Starting point: Our bike rental shop at ul. Chlebnicka 19/20, right in the heart of the Main Town. You can also join guided bike tours run by Poland By Locals — departures everayday at 10:00 AM from the same address.

Cycling in Gdańsk Main Town

Option 1: Old Town, Shipyard, and Food Halls (approx. 2.5–3 h)

The Main Town — a Quick Loop Through the Highlights

Start with a ride along ul. Długa, passing the colourful merchant houses. At the end of the street, stop at the Golden Gate — a striking example of Baroque architecture. Then turn into ul. Piwna to see the Great Armoury, a magnificent Renaissance building once used to store weapons. A short ride further stands St. Mary's Church — if you have time, climb the tower (409 steps) for a panoramic view of the city. For a detailed description of every stop in the Old Town, see our guide to cycling Gdańsk's Old Town.

Continue to the Motława waterfront, passing the Gdańsk Crane — a medieval port crane and one of the oldest of its kind in Europe. A short ride away is the Polish Post Office — the site of the first battle of World War II, worth a brief stop.

The Gdańsk Shipyard and the WWII Museum

Head towards the Museum of the Second World War — a modern, monumental building dedicated to the events of 1939–1945. It is an essential stop for history lovers. From there, follow the Motława path to the shipyard grounds. The Imperial Shipyard trail will lead you to the BHP Hall, where in August 1980 Lech Wałęsa and the striking workers signed the 21 Demands, launching the Solidarity movement. Standing in the room where it happened feels like stepping back into history.

A Culinary Stop: 100cznia or Montownia

If you are visiting Gdańsk in summer, make sure to stop at 100cznia — an open-air food court set in the industrial scenery of the shipyard, offering a wide range of local and international dishes. Craft beer, street food, and shipyard atmosphere all in one place — perfect for refuelling after a ride.

When the weather is less favourable, head to Montownia — a food hall housed in a former submarine factory. A dozen or so stalls serve everything from coffee and snacks to full meals. The unique industrial setting makes it a dining experience in itself.

Option 2: Cycling to Westerplatte (approx. 3 h)

If you are interested in history, a trip to Westerplatte is an absolute must. This is where World War II began on 1 September 1939, when a handful of Polish soldiers defended the Military Transit Depot for seven days against overwhelming German forces.

From our rental shop it is roughly a 40-minute ride each way. Most of the route follows bike paths along the Motława River and the port canal, making the journey comfortable and easy even for beginners. At the site, plan to spend about an hour — see the Westerplatte Monument commemorating the defenders, walk among the ruins of the barracks and guardhouses, and absorb the atmosphere of this extraordinary place. It is an emotional and educational experience that connects you with Gdańsk's history in a way no textbook can match.

An added bonus of cycling: on the return trip you will bypass the traffic jams that can bring cars to a standstill during the summer season. A bike is the fastest and most convenient way to get here and back.

Option 3: To the Beach — Old Town to Brzeźno (approx. 2–2.5 h)

For a more relaxed ride, head from the Old Town to Brzeźno — a seaside district of Gdańsk with a wide, sandy beach and a historic pier. The route follows well-marked bike paths through quiet residential neighbourhoods and green spaces. It is an easy, pleasant ride — flat terrain, light traffic, and a sea breeze on the final stretch.

Once you arrive at Brzeźno Beach, relax, grab a cold drink at one of the beachfront cafés, walk onto the pier, and enjoy the view over the Bay of Gdańsk. On a hot day — take a dip. After your break, hop back on the bike and cruise back to the centre at a leisurely pace. The entire trip, including an hour-long stop at the beach, fits within 2–2.5 hours.

This option pairs perfectly with a morning stroll through the Old Town on foot — after your walk, pick up a bike and ride to the beach, combining culture with seaside relaxation.

All three options run on flat terrain, so a standard trekking bike is more than enough. If you prefer an even easier ride, our shop also stocks electric bikes.
